Arab US Media Alliance

Welcome to the Arab-US Media Alliance social network!

Welcome to the Arab-US Media Alliance social network, created for participants and alumni of the Aspen Institute’s Arab-U.S. Media Forum as a resource to (1) find and share information, (2) develop professional relationships and collaborations, and (3) extend the reach and impact of Forum activities beyond the physical and temporal boundaries of the conference.

We believe that connecting critical media players from each region and drawing from the deep well of talent and experience that they bring to the conversation can serve as a catalyst to turn insight into constructive action. In collaboration with participants in the 2009 Arab-US Media Forum (the sixth Forum meeting convened in partnership with the Ford Foundation) and through the growth of the Arab-US Media Alliance social network, we plan to do just that.

About the Arab-US Media Alliance social network (http://arabusmedia.org). The top blog here is the central source for information about the 2009 Forum meeting in Washington, D.C. Here you will find updates to the agenda, recommendations for common background reading, participant information and other useful links. And it is also a place where the conversation can begin to take shape with your active participation. Please check here frequently for updates.

The Groups section is where you can find recommendations made in previous Forum meetings (2008 in Jordan, 2006 in the U.S., 2005 in Dubai, UAE, and 2004 in Luxor, Egypt and the U.S.), and where conversations and collaborations on specific professional or regional issues can develop.

This is a group blog and we want to hear your voice! Please feel free to post your thoughts and ideas about agenda topics, your current work, or other developments that you think would be of interest to Forum participants. In particular, we encourage you to share your knowledge of media-related projects that are having a positive impact on Arab-U.S. relations, particularly in the area of public knowledge and cultural understanding. These examples can then inform our discussions on what works in Arab-U.S. partnerships and collaborations, especially in Session II and the Working Group session.

About the April Forum. The 2009 Arab-US Media Forum is funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. We will begin with an opening reception and dinner on Monday evening, April 13. This will provide an excellent opportunity for introductions among participants and to the Forum itself. The first substantive sessions will begin on Tuesday morning. As with past Forum conferences, plenary sessions will be conducted using the Aspen Institute's moderated roundtable format: 25-30 peers around the table engaging in open and candid dialogue, and moderated by Charlie Firestone, Executive Director of the Communications and Society Program. There are no speeches, no formal presentations (with the exception of two very brief, targetted presentations to begin Sessions I and II), and no need to prepare specific remarks. We encourage you to dress comfortably for the sessions.

After lunch on Tuesday, participants will go into smaller working groups to allow for more focused work on specific areas, with each group charged with reporting back specific models, recommendations and needs. There will be a group dinner on Tuesday night. Our final sessions on Wednesday morning will debate and then refine the working group reports into a well developed, concrete plan of action. The Forum will adjourn after lunch.

The Forum agenda is designed so that each session builds substantially upon the work of the previous session. Its success depends upon the information sharing and active engagement among a diverse group, making it important to maintain the geographic and professional diversity of participants throughout the conference. While we appreciate the substantial commitment of time that this entails, we ask that each participant plan to attend all sessions.

We look forward to welcoming our 2009 Arab-US Media Forum participants to the Aspen Institute's Washington headquarters in just a couple of weeks. If you have questions or comments about the Forum meeting or this social network, please contact us. In the meantime, we hope that you find this site a valuable resource in preparing for the Forum and advancing our common goals. If we can do more to help, please let us know.
